As gas prices climbed during summer, broadcast networks relentlessly supplied an onslaught of high gas price segments. But as prices plummeted, ABC admitted that its gas price predictions were wrong.

The Oct. 14 “World News with Charles Gibson” reported falling gas prices and finally told viewers its own forecasts of prices soaring even higher in the short term were incorrect.

What a week! Capitol Hill battles over the bailout. Wall Street tumbles. Anchor John Roberts tells us “economists are now warning of a new recession.”

Oops. That last bit comes from May 2004 – right as the recovery from the previous recession was getting into full swing. John Roberts was an anchor, but he plied his trade with CBS instead of his current CNN role.

Despite including a high gas price prediction, ABC “World News with Charles Gibson” provided much-needed context to rising gas prices in its May 27 broadcast. The report acknowledged the supply and demand factors currently driving up the cost of gasoline.

“Economist Jeff Rubin says one bad hurricane this summer could affect refinery capacity and send gas prices soaring,” Sharyn Alfonsi reported. “But even with good weather, global demand will push prices up all summer long.”
