Gas Prices Top $1-a-Gallon Higher than Year Ago; Media Don't Blame Obama

The average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline hit $3.86 on April 25, more than $1-a-gallon higher than a year earlier and less than 25 cents away from the record high price of gasoline set in July 2008.

In fact, per gallon prices are more than $2 higher than when Obama took office Jan. 20, 2009. Yet the president has been nearly exempt from criticism on the issue of rising prices, despite a six-month drilling moratorium and more regulatory hurdles for industry.

General Electric (NYSE:GE) is the parent company of the major media conglomerate NBC Universal, which owns media outlets NBC, MSNBC and CNBC. At times that has led to the lines between corporate advocacy and journalism being blurred.

That was certainly the case when GE’s CEO Jeff Immelt appeared on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” May 20 to discuss the White House meeting of President Barack Obama’s 16-member Economic Recovery Advisory Board headed by former Federal Reserve chief Paul Volcker.

As gas prices continue to rise, more and more Americans are in favor of opening up areas now off-limits for oil exploration and drilling, but a Newsweek magazine editor said on June 23 that Sen. Barack Obama is “more in touch with the voters” on energy despite his anti-drilling stance.

Newsweek’s senior Washington Correspondent and NBC news analyst Howard Fineman appeared on NBC’s “Today” June 23 to discuss the presidential candidates’ energy plans. NBC’s Ann Curry asked Fineman which candidate is more “in touch” with voters on energy.

That’s what the International Energy Agency said in early July. According to the Financial Times, “oil looks extremely tight in five years time.”

Why wait five years? Oil looks pretty tight right now. As of this writing, oil is floating around $74-$75 and gas is more than $3 a gallon yet again. We aren’t running out by any means, but it’s not exactly pleasant for consumers.
