A new TV program, loosely swiped from a TV show of long ago, debuts tonight on Fox. As I understand it, in “The Secret Millionaire” we will see millionaires go undercover, work for a week in some poorly paid job and live as the oppressed workers and economically troubled live. The millionaires will find one of the downtrodden they meet especially worthy and, revealing themselves as “secret millionaires,” will whip out their checkbooks and give the deserving individual big bundles of money. It’s sort of a privatized bailout.

The news media have, for two weeks, endlessly expressed outrage at AIG’s spending several hundred thousand dollars on a sales conference held at a Phoenix resort – after getting federal bailout billions. The impression conveyed has been that AIG executives took money from us taxpayers and immediately turned around and blew it on wine, women and song, hanging out at a hoity-toity resort, wallowing in caviar on our dime.

For two weeks, I have watched the talking heads of financial news – on CNBC, Fox Business, even Bloomberg – discussing the evolving GM-Chrysler merger to be funded by the federal government. I am astounded they have all missed the story or chosen not to comment on it.

Of course, I expect the regular, mainstream media to bungle this story; they can barely spell ‘business’ let alone do any in-depth reporting about it. But you’d think the financial wizards on the business channels might get it right. As far as I can tell, they haven’t.

I have met and talked with many politicians, mostly when they were out speaking for their suppers just as I was. I repeatedly spent backstage time with four former U.S. Presidents, policy wonks like Bill Bennett, military leaders like Gen. Colin Powell and even a couple flaming liberals including Mario Cuomo. Some smart, some not.

Sen. John McCain’s adviser, Carly Fiorina, coming off a controversial tenure running Hewlett-Packard, has been widely quoted as ill-advisedly but accurately observing that none of the candidates, McCain included, are capable of running a Fortune 500 company. I would be reluctant to put any in charge of a small business either. I advise over 20,000 small business owners directly, over 1 million indirectly, and I can’t imagine recommending hiring any of these four.
