‘Broke Girls’ Show Redeeming Feature
CBS’s “2 Broke Girls” lives for snide racism and crude sex jokes, but it may have some redeeming features. Besides focusing on two women who genuinely want to start a business, it also showcases the hollow nature of the hook-up culture.
In the latest episode, Caroline Channing (Beth Behrs) announces that she’s going to call up her ex-boyfriend for another “booty call” – she wants some action so they’re just going to hook up, no strings attached.
Her friend Max Black (Kat Dennings) replies, “As president of the casual sex society, local chapter, I call bull on your booty.”
“You think that booty breakfast will maybe lead to a booty dinner then maybe booty engaged and booty married and have a couple booty kids and a booty retirement home and then booty die together,” she says.
Caroline doesn’t quaff at this explanation, and later on, she tells her ex “if we both have [herpes], no one else is going to want us, so we should just get married.”
Not a romantic proposal. Nevertheless, her desire for constancy, love, and marriage speaks volumes about her distaste for the empty uncertainty of “booty calls.”
This does nothing to excuse “2 Broke Girls,” but even the bleakest cloud has a little silver lining.
