CMI On TV – ‘Game of Thrones’ Jabs Social Cons Over Gays
The last episode of HBO’s hit show “Game of Thrones” featured nudity and a homosexual scene. Now, they’re justifying it.
Buried in an excellent marriage intrigue scene, HBO gets in a jab at social conservatives. Lady Olenna Tyrell (Diana Rigg), Lady Dowager of Highgarden, refuses to marry her gay grandson Loras to Cersei Lannister – she’s too old.
The Hand of the King, Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance) points out “a boy with his affliction should be grateful for the opportunity to marry the most beautiful woman in the kingdoms, and remove the stain from his name.”
Olenna is unmoved: “It’s a natural thing, two boys having a go at each other beneath the sheets.”
Tywin responds angrily – “Perhaps Highgarden has a tolerance for unnatural behavior.”
“True, we don’t tie ourselves in knots over a discreet bit of buggery,” Olenna admits. Cunningly, she adds, “brothers and sisters – where I come from that stain would be very difficult to wash out.”
It’s a cutting reference to the fact that Tywin’s son and daughter have committed incest, and the boy king Joffrey is really their bastard son. But one unnatural act does not excuse another.
Olenna exhibits all the modern liberal sensibilities, and in his scene Tywin is clearly portrayed as the angry, backward conservative, “tying himself in knots over a discreet bit of buggery.”
None of this comes from the pen of George R.R. Martin. The books never spell out Loras’ homosexuality, much less a defense of it coming from such a dignified lady as Olenna.
