Cuba Honors Pro-Castro NYT Reporter

Herbert Matthews fawning interview of Fidel Castro in 1957 made the future Communist dictator an international figure.

Media Research Center's Brent Baker caught this on Special Report with Brit Hume Monday night: Cuba's communist government is honoring former Times reporter Herbert Matthews, who in Hume's words "helped create the legend of Fidel Castro."

According to a Reuters story, Cuba has installed a memorial plaque at the site of the hideout where Times reporter Matthews secretly met the future communist leader in 1957. The resulting article by Matthews proving that the future dictator was still alive, made Castro an international figure.

Hume recited from Matthews' 1957 piece: "'The personality of the man is overpowering. It was easy to see that his men adored him and also to see why he has caught the imagination of the youth of Cuba all over the island. Here was an educated, dedicated fanatic, a man of ideals, of courage and of remarkable qualities of leadership.'"
