The ‘How I Met Your’ Mother Revealed
For fans of “How I Met Your Mother,” a yellow umbrella holds a very high, rather unnatural, significance.
In Season 1, as Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) tells his children the story of the show’s title, he mentions a yellow umbrella. “Kids, there’s more than one story of how I met your mother. You know the short version, the thing with your mom’s yellow umbrella, but there’s a bigger story…”
Mentioned in no less than 8 episodes, the umbrella becomes a symbol inextricably linked to the woman behind the show’s mystery. Ted ends up dating many women, but only one inspires the 9 seasons of this rapidly-closing show.
On Monday, in the show’s 8th season finale, the mother’s identity was revealed – well, not her identity, but at least the identity of the actress.
Christin Milioti, never before featured in the show, strolled through the train station in the exact boots Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan) hoped Ted’s “future wife” would wear. As the acress best known for her Tony-nominated performance in “Once,” Milioti set the stage for the final season by laying down her yellow umbrella at the concierge.
In this pivotal moment, while his character’s future wife took the screen, Josh Radnor was cracking jokes – and speaking seriously – in Washington, DC. There, he called lobbying Congress for arts funding “super depressing,” and said, “that’s the big reveal, that’s the big twist in the series…”
“Ted is half-Jewish, played by a full Jew!”
Disregard the mother – this is the real secret!
