'Scrappy' Harry Reid 'Giddy' at Having Found 'Right Opponent' in Nutty Sharron Angle
Political reporter Adam Nagourney, always exquisitely sensitive to potential good news for Democrats/bad news for Republicans, thinks he's found hope for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, who is expected to struggle to hold his seat in the upcoming election against a Tea Party favorite, Republican challenger Sharron Angle.
A pro-Democrat vibe permeates Nagourney's Thursday posting on the paper's "Caucus" blog, "Reid Finds Grist for Ads in Angle's Comments."
For Republicans, the juiciest Senate target of this election year is almost certainly Harry Reid, the Democratic majority leader from Nevada.
So can you blame the Reid camp for feeling just a little bit giddy these days about the stream of questionable comments coming from his Republican opponent, Sharron Angle, as she moves from being a product of the Tea Party to the Republican candidate in one of the most toughly fought races in the country?
The latest stumble from Ms. Angle came as she agreed with a caller on a Las Vegas radio interview show Wednesday that the $20 billion oil spill victim compensation fund by BP with a slush fund, and that President Obama had overstepped his bounds in forcing BP to make amends for the damage in the Gulf. "Government shouldn't be doing that to a private company," Ms. Angle said. "And I think you named it clearly: It's a slush fund."
Nagourney sounds "just a little bit giddy" himself over Reid's allegedly improving prospects.
Ms. Angle was not the first choice of Republican leaders to run against Mr. Reid (though she may have been the first choice of Mr. Reid to run against Mr. Reid). That said, Republicans had viewed Mr. Reid as such a weak candidate that it would be almost impossible not to defeat him. Democrats have always seen Mr. Reid as a scrappy and well-financed candidate who could scrape out a win with the right opponent: and many are beginning to think he might have found her.
