Diane Sawyer Gushes Over Hillary's Purple Glasses: 'Nobody Does Unplugged Quite Like' Her

World News anchor Diane Sawyer has a habit of showcasing fawning, deeply irrelevant stories on prominent Democrats. She continued this pattern on Thursday, informing viewers that Hillary Clinton wore flamboyant, purple glasses at a recent ceremony. Sawyer hyped that this was "proof that nobody does unplugged quite like the Secretary of State."

The host insisted that the over-the-top glasses highlight Clinton's "master class in letting your hair down." Sawyer recapped, "These past few months, we've been watching her swig a beer, brandish a scrunchy without apology and makeup-free and telling everybody she doesn't care what they think."

What didn't World News find time for on Thursday? The Fast and Furious scandal. After actually covering the controversy on Wednesday, Sawyer went back to ignoring it. [MP3 audio here.]

On May 2, 2012, the host hyped "steamy" details from an early ex-girlfriend of Barack Obama. She even quoted from a halting, disjointed love letter that the future president wrote at age 22: "Moments trip gently along over here. Snow caps the bushes in unexpected ways. Birds shoot and spin like balls of sound. My feet hum over the dry walks."

A transcript of the June 21 segment, which aired a 6:50pm EDT, follows:

DIANE SAWYER: And now to the ongoing master class in letting your hair down by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. These past few months, we've been watching her swig a beer, brandish a scrunchy without apology and makeup free and telling everybody she doesn't care what they think. And today, donning wing-tipped purple glasses at the swearing in of a new assistant secretary whose favorite color just happens to be purple. Proof that nobody does unplugged quite like the Secretary of State, who is leaving office by the end of the year.
