In April 2011, CMI
wrote about an internet marketing piece [1] from preppy clothing brand J. Crew
in which company president Jenna Lyons was pictured painting the toenails of her
young son. "Lucky for me I ended up with a boy whose favorite color is
pink," said the photo's caption. "Toenail painting is way more fun in
neon."
Fox News picked up the story and a media storm ensued. Liberals scoffed at social conservatives' concerns that J. Crew was exploiting and normalizing the feminization of the boy with 'blatant propaganda.'
But a month later, an ABC News.com story placed J-Crew at the center of a trend in LGBT marketing when its catalog featured gay models [2].
And now, Lyons appears to have come out as a lesbian.
At Glamour’s “Women of the Year” ceremony on Monday night Lyons was named 2012’s “Fashion Original” and during her acceptance speech Lyons thanked her speculated partner Courtney Crangi, who she said had “shown me new love.” [3]
In October 2011 “The New York Post” reported, [4] “A fashion insider told us after the breakup [with her husband], Jenna fell in love with Courtney, whom she had been friends with for some time. They’ve known each other for years through the fashion business.”
