84-Year-Old Woman Visits Strangers at the Hospital ‘Everday’
The hospital is a scary place, which most people avoid if at all possible. In spite of that, or more likely because of it, 84-year-old Sigrid Mills of Dover Delaware visits hospitals everyday to brighten the days of strangers and make their stays a little less lonely.
It all began 30 years ago when Mills would go to the hospital to visit friends and fellow church members. Today the vast majority of hospital patients she visits are complete strangers.
This report by CBS, shows Sigrid walking up to the receptionist at the hospital asking if she knew anyone who would like a visitor. Mill’s then tells the patient she’s visiting, “You don't know me and I don't know you, but we're going to get to know each other.” She breaks the ice by offering up fresh baked goods, like cheesecake, or will sing to them her favorite hymns.
Mills ends each visit to every patient with a promise, “I’ll see you tomorrow.” And she does. , “Because I have a big mouth,” she told CBS reporter Chris Reid. “When I go visit people I say, 'I'll see you tomorrow,' and once I promise something like that, I keep my promise.” And she hasn’t broken a promise in 10 years.
