CBS Touts Clinton Memoir: Hillary Was Comforted by Mom After 2008 Loss
In an effort to promote Hillary Clinton's upcoming memoir, Hard Choices, on Monday's CBS This Morning,
co-host Gayle King proclaimed: "Former Secretary of State, that would
be Hillary Clinton, says no one had a bigger influence in her life than
her mom. In a excerpt from her new memoir...she remembers Dorothy Rodham
and the lessons that she learned." [Listen to the audio]
An extended clip followed of Clinton reciting her a portion of her
memoir for the book on tape version: "Having her [Dorothy Rodham] so
close became a source of great comfort to me, especially in the
difficult period after the end of the 2008 campaign. I'd come home from a
long day at the Senate or the State Department, slide in next to her at
the small table in our breakfast nook, and let everything just pour
out."
After the free advertising concluded, King acknowledged: "Hard Choices
is being published by Simon and Schuster, which is a division of CBS."
King gushed over the excerpt: "It's kind of nice. That's from the book
on tape, so you can hear Hillary basically telling her own story.
Chelsea Clinton has said the same thing about her grandmother, the
influence that her grandmother had on her."
Fellow co-host Charlie Rose predicted: "I think we're going to hear
more and more about how difficult it was for her to face the
consequences of the 2008 election."
Co-host Norah O'Donnell sympathized: "And she says she was down in the
dumps – that's my word, using that down in the dumps – and how much her
mother really helped her during that period. And that was an interesting
– about how she would come home and pour her heart out, as she said, to
her mother who was by her side."
CNN boosted Clinton's memoir on Monday as "highly-anticipated" and "a very human, relatable story."

HILLARY CLINTON [HARD CHOICES BOOK ON TAPE]: Having her so close became a source of great comfort to me, especially in the difficult period after the end of the 2008 campaign. I'd come home from a long day at the Senate or the State Department, slide in next to her at the small table in our breakfast nook, and let everything just pour out. Mom measured her life by how much she was able to help us and serve others. I knew if she was still with us, she would be urging us to do the same, never rest on your laurels, never quit, never stop working to make the world a better place. That's our unfinished business.
KING: And she says no one did more to shape the person she became than Dorothy Rodham. She passed away in 2011.
Hard Choices is being published by Simon and Schuster, which is a division of CBS.
It's kind of nice. That's from the book on tape, so you can hear Hillary basically telling her own story. Chelsea Clinton has said the same thing about her grandmother, the influence that her grandmother had on her.
CHARLIE ROSE: I think we're going to hear more and more about how difficult it was for her to face the consequences of the 2008 election.
NORAH O'DONNELL: Yes. And she says she was down in the dumps – that's my word, using that down in the dumps – and how much her mother really helped her during that period. And that was an interesting – about how she would come home and pour her heart out, as she said, to her mother who was by her side. Also, her talking about unfinished business, of course.
KING: Which leaves that question.
ROSE: That's why we love mothers.
KING: Very nice.
