NBC's Gregory Spins for Obama: Dems 'Plenty Energized' by Fear of GOP

Appearing on Sunday's NBC Today, Meet the Press host David Gregory recited Obama campaign talking points perfectly as he predicted: "...Well, he's going to raise plenty of money.... even if people are disappointed with the President, they're going to focus on the alternative. They're going to say, 'Do you really want to hand it over to Republicans?' I think Democrats will be plenty energized..."

That response was prompted by co-host Jenna Wolfe helpfully touting Obama's fundraising numbers, emphasizing small-dollar donors: "...they raised over $29 million in January for their re-election. Ninety-eight percent of those donations were $250 or less. What does that say about Obama supporters?" The headline on screen added: "Obama's Fundraising Driven By Small Donors."

Gregory praised the Obama money machine: "...this is the White House, the President, strong grassroots organization that's been building for four years.... he's going to be able to raise plenty of money, even in this season of the super PAC, with all of this unregulated money coming in."

"Even in this season of the super PAC"? Gregory conveniently omitted Obama's complete reversal on accepting super PAC money.

Here is a portion of Gregory's February 19 exchange with Wolfe:

WOLFE: I want to ask you a question about President Obama and his re-election campaign. The administration's announced they raised over $29 million in January for their re-election. Ninety-eight percent of those donations were $250 or less. What does that say about Obama supporters?

GREGORY: Well, he's going to raise plenty of money. I mean, I don't think there should have been any doubt about that. I mean, there was talk of it being a billion-dollar campaign haul. I don't know if he's going to get to that. He's going to raise plenty of money. I mean, this is the White House, the President, strong grassroots organization that's been building for four years right – you know, picking up right where they left off. And even if people are disappointed with the President, they're going to focus on the alternative. They're going to say do you really want to hand it over to Republicans? I think Democrats will be plenty energized and he's going to be able to raise plenty of money, even in this season of the super PAC, with all of this unregulated money coming in.

WOLFE: Alright, David Gregory. David, thank you so much.

GREGORY: Thanks, Jenna.
