How I Met Your Mother Disappoints in Final Season Premier
"This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper."
~T.S. Elliot
Let me first just say that I am a big fan of How I Met Your Mother. By now, though, you should know what's coming next.
This final season premier failed to explode into greatness, rather preferring to whimper into the corner of perverted humor.
It just wasn't any good. There were parts that made me laugh, sure, but by and large the humor was forced and/or bawdy. If it wasn't a failed scene of Marshall trying to get a picture taken off the web, it was Barney's erotic cake of his brother and his gay "husband". (I use quotation marks because no matter what the state may say, marriage can only be between a man and a woman. Therefore, there is no true marriage between Barney's brother and his partner.)
I knew this would be a brutal hour of television after the first five minutes there were jokes about bestiality and incest. Heck, Barney and Robin even try to justify stilling getting married if they discover they are cousins (to be fair, they are repulsed by the idea even if they still want to get married).
Let's not forget Barney's brother. He reveals that he and his "husband" are getting a "divorce" because, you know, gay marriage is normal and normal people get divorced. Yay divorce! Yay gay marriage!
But that wasn't the worst part, the worst part was Barney's erotic cake of his brother and his brother's partner which was used as the platform for a variety of gay sexual innuendos, including one about Barney eating a certain part of the cake.
It was a shame that all of this overshadowed our first extended glimpse of the future Mrs. Ted Mosby. She seems like an interesting character who got lost in a bad episode.
As a fan of the show, I can only hope for improvement. Maybe there is still time left for the season to go out with a bang.
